When Should I Activate My eSIM?
For any further information or support requests, this page has been designed exclusively for Tourlane customers.
Key Points
- Activate your eSIM on your day of departure, before you leave home.
- You need a stable internet connection — WiFi or a strong mobile signal (4G/5G).
- Do NOT wait until you arrive at your destination — you may not have internet to complete the installation.
- Do NOT activate weeks in advance — your plan is active for a set number of days starting from activation.
Recommended timing
When ? Morning of departure
Where ? At home on WiFi or 5G
Why ? Best option. Calm environment, stable connection, time to troubleshoot if needed. OR
When ? At the airport
Where ? On airport WiFi or your mobile connection
Why ? Good backup if you did not install at home.
Why not earlier?
Your eSIM plan begins when you activate it. If you install the eSIM days before your trip, you may use up plan days before you arrive at your destination.
Install on departure day. Not before.
Why not at your destination?
Installing the eSIM requires an internet connection. If you arrive at your destination without the eSIM installed, you will need to find a WiFi network (hotel, cafe, airport) before you can set it up. This can leave you without data when you need it most — navigating from the airport, finding your transfer, or contacting your local guide.
What internet connection do I need?
The eSIM download is small. Any stable connection will work:
- Home WiFi — most reliable option
- Mobile data (4G/5G) — works well if you have a strong signal
- Airport WiFi — usually fine, though some airport networks can be slow
The key word is stable. A weak or intermittent connection can cause the download to fail.
After installation
Installing the eSIM is only the first step. You must also enable data roaming and set the eSIM as your mobile data line before it will connect abroad. See Setting Up Your eSIM for Internet — this takes about 1 minute.
Once both steps are done, your phone will connect automatically when you arrive at your destination.
