What should I do if I discover damage to my rental car that wasn't noted during pickup?
If you discover damage to your rental car that isn't documented in the handover protocol, quick action is important to avoid these damages being attributed to you later.
Immediate actions:
- Document the damage immediately with photos from different angles
- Make sure that date and time are visible in the photos or note them separately
- Take close-ups of the damage as well as overview shots showing the position on the vehicle
- Also photograph the license plate of the vehicle to clearly identify it
Contacting the car rental provider:
- Immediately inform the car rental provider about the damages discovered
- If possible, visit the nearest branch of the provider in person
- Alternatively, call the emergency number listed in your rental car documents
- Insist on written confirmation that the damage was not caused by you
Documentation for your records:
- Ask for a copy of the updated damage report
- Note names and contact details of the employees you spoke with
- Keep all documents and digital evidence until the rental car return is fully completed
- If necessary, also inform Tourlane about the incident
